Expert Witness (CTP): Party-Appointed Technical Consultant
IT expert witness for civil and criminal cases. Technical opinions, analysis of opposing party's acquisitions and courtroom assistance.
At a glance
When digital evidence ends up in court, you need someone who can explain it to the judge, and who can challenge the opposing party's evidence. We serve as Expert Witness (CTP) alongside your attorney.
Want to know more?
The Expert Witness (CTP, Consulente Tecnico di Parte) is a trusted professional appointed by a party to assist their attorney on technical matters. Unlike the Court-Appointed Expert (CTU, Consulente Tecnico d'Ufficio), no specific professional board registration is required: what matters is demonstrable technical expertise. We attend the CTU's expert operations, draft technical opinions and, when needed, challenge the opposing party's conclusions with solid arguments.
Why choose this service
Digital evidence speaks, but you need to know how to read it
An unverified hash, an acquisition without chain of custody, a log without context: technical details make the difference between solid evidence and challengeable evidence.
Well-founded technical challenge
If the opposing party's expert opinion has methodological flaws, we identify them and document them so the judge can understand them.
Understandable language
A technical opinion is of little use if the judge cannot understand it. We write for those who must decide, not for those who already know.
What the Expert Witness (CTP) does
The Expert Witness (CTP, Consulente Tecnico di Parte) is your trusted expert on IT matters in legal proceedings. It is not a neutral role: the CTP works for the party that appoints them, with the objective of protecting their interests through technical expertise.
In practice, the Expert Witness (CTP):
- Attends Court-Appointed Expert (CTU) operations: is present when the court-appointed expert carries out their verifications, checks that proper procedures are followed and flags any irregularities
- Drafts party expert opinions: produces independent technical reports that support their client’s case
- Analyses opposing evidence: examines acquisitions and expert opinions submitted by the opposing party, looking for methodological flaws or conclusions not supported by the data
- Files observations: submits critical notes to the CTU’s expert opinion when the conclusions are open to challenge
- Assists in court: when the judge requests technical clarifications, the CTP is present to suggest questions to the attorney

How we work with your attorney
The Expert Witness (CTP) does not replace the attorney: they work alongside them on technical matters. In practice:
- Initial briefing: we meet with the attorney to understand the litigation strategy and the objectives of the expert opinion
- Formulating questions: we help formulate the technical questions to be put to the Court-Appointed Expert (CTU), so they are precise and useful to the party’s case
- Evidence acquisition: if digital evidence is needed, we acquire it using forensic methodology before the proceedings
- Expert operations: we attend the CTU’s operations, monitor the methodology and raise observations
- Party expert opinion: we draft a technical report that the attorney can file in support of their conclusions
- Courtroom assistance: we are available for technical clarifications during hearings
Requirements and qualifications
Under Italian law, the Expert Witness (CTP) is a trusted professional chosen by the party: no specific professional board registration is required. What matters is demonstrable technical expertise and the ability to produce expert opinions that withstand cross-examination.
Our expert opinions are based on:
- Rigorous methodology: acquisitions with chain of custody, cryptographic hashes, certified timestamp
- International standards: procedures compliant with ISO 27037 (digital evidence handling) and Italian Law 48/2008 (ratification of the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime)
- Reproducibility: every operation is documented so that an independent expert can verify it
- Clarity of exposition: expert opinions are written to be understood by those who must decide, not only by those with technical expertise
